NDN Applauds Increase in Federal Minimum Wage
by Maggie Barker
July 19, 2007
This year, the new Democratic-led Congress won a key legislative victory for American workers and families by approving the first increase in the federal minimum wage in 10 years. Next Tuesday, July 24th, the federal wage will rise 70 cents to $5.85, eventually increasing to $7.25 by 2009, helping to ensure that more Americans can take another important step up the economic ladder towards prosperity.
NDN lauds this long overdue increase in the minimum wage. For the last two years, we’ve helped lead a national effort to ensure that our vigorous economy generates prosperity shared by all Americans. Last fall, for example, NDN joined forces with the Civic Participation Campaign’s Mi Familia Vota campaign to pass ballot initiatives in two states, Arizona and Colorado, to raise the hourly minimum wage. In this effort, we capitalized upon our expertise in reaching out to the Latino community by launching targeted ads in both states. Thanks to our work, both ballot propositions passed.
As progressives, we cannot accept a U.S. economy that enriches the wealthy but leaves many other Americans far behind. NDN’s Globalization Initiative has made the case, and will continue to do so, that despite strong GDP and productivity growth and record corporate profits, wages and incomes of most Americans have stagnated. We look forward to working with you on the national and local levels to ensure that economic globalization works for all Americans.
