Meet and Greet with Kirsten Gillibrand

This past Monday, NDN held a meet and greet with Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand (NY-20) who had just returned from a trip to Iraq and Pakistan. She traveled with a small bipartisan delegation of House Armed Services Committee and military personnel to meet with the troops and evaluate developments in Iraq.

New York Times series on NDN friend Cory A. Booker, Mayor of Newark

Cory Booker, the dynamic and powerful new Mayor of Newark, New Jersey, has been featured in a series of pieces in the New York Times over the last few months. The latest in the installment ran this morning and is worth reviewing.

I'm sure that those of you who have been active with NDN had the opportunity to meet Cory over the years. We are all proud of the job he is doing in Newark, and we all wish him continued good luck.

Meet and Greet with Patrick Murphy

Last night, NDN held a meet and greet with Congressman Patrick Murphy (PA-08). A rising star in the Democratic party and the first Iraq war veteran elected to Congress, Congressman Murphy discussed many issues with us: his efforts to bring a Green Manufacturing Zone to PA, the need to increase investment in high school science and engineering, how the US needs to regain its role as a leader in innovation, and of course his views on Iraq.

NDN hosts Cecile Richards in NYC

Last night, NDN held a fantastic reception with Cecile Richards, one of the Founders of our New Politics Institute and the President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. An extremely thoughtful and engaging speaker, Cecile spoke to us on behalf of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. She discussed the GOP candidates and how their wavering stances on abortion will harm them during their campaigns, as well as how Americans need to view the debate around abortion as also being about the right and access to contraception. NDN Friend and Former Network Board Member Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand Described as "impressive, accessible representative"

It's no surprise that our friend Kirsten Gillibrand is making her mark in NY's 20th CD. After all she is intelligent, articulate and attentive to her constituents. The Albany Times Union published this letter from a former aide to her Republican opponent John Sweeney.

As a former aide to John Sweeney while he was in the Pataki administration, I must say what a tremendous job Kirsten Gillibrand is doing. She is the most accessible politician in the region. Every weekend, she is somewhere in the 20th Congressional District, letting us know exactly where she stands on issues and why, which is a refreshing change. I'm sure we all have stories about experiences we have had dealing with Rep. Gillibrand, but I feel compelled to tell you about mine….

I figured I would see the usual political maneuver in which the politician walks through the room, shakes a couple of hands, gets a picture with a leading area vet, says how hard she is fighting for us in Washington and then is whisked out of the room, all in a matter of minutes.

What happened could not have been further from this. Rep. Gillibrand went to the podium, disconnected the microphone, walked to the vet seated nearest her, gave him the microphone, sat down, opened a notebook, got out a pen and asked, "What do you want me to do as your representative in Congress?" I have to tell you, I was astonished.

Rep. Gillibrand sat there for 2 1/2 hours, listening as we passed the microphone from person to person. She asked questions, gave opinions and answers, and took down personal contact information if she did not have an answer, promising to call us back.

Our district could not have asked for a better person to serve us. If she keeps this up, she will be our representative for life
