Las Vegas, NV - It is a very proud day for many Hispanics today, as Obama nominates the first Hispanic to serve on the United States Supreme Court.  I am not going to spend much time talking about Sotomayor's biography because you will get that from all the major news media outlets over the next few days.

I do want to spend some time talking about why this choice is so important to many Hispanics.  As President Obama travels to my home state of Nevada to raise money for US Senator Reid and the Nevada Democratic Party, the media will focus its attention on the choice of Sotomayor.  First, I want to state that after you look at Sotomayor's credentials, you will see that she is supremely qualified for this post.  However, beyond her judicial credentials, she was heavily supported by Hispanics for this post becuase she is such a qualified Hispanic.  President Obama was elected President with strong support from Hispanics in key battleground states such as Nevada.  His efforts here were amplified by the strong organization that was built by US Senator Reid and the Nevada Democratic Party.  In fact, the 2008 Nevada Presidential caucuses were the first real test that President Obama endured in courting Hispanic voters.  It is only fitting, that he travel to Nevada on the day that he announces the most historic Hispanic appointment of his Administration.

Obama selecting Sotomayor is important on so many levels to Hispanics.  It continues to cement his support among Hispanic voters, but it also continues keep his revolutionary campaign moving.  A campaign that inspired so many people to engage in the political process out of "HOPE" for a better future.  Sotomayor offers "HOPE" to many Hispanics and all Americans.  That a child from humble beginnings, raised by a single mother, speaking a foreign language as her native tongue, can rise above the obstacles and the struggles and achieve such an honor as being nominated to the Supreme Court, is an immese sense and source of pride for many.  Yes it was "HOPE" that drove many Hipsanics to the voting booths on election day in 2008, and it is "HOPE" that fills them today as they watch Sonia Sotomayor fill the airwaves.    I watched my daughter as Sotomayor gave her speech this morning, and could see the inspiration in her eyes.  You see she learned that reading Nancy Drew inspired Sotomayor to pursue her legal career, and reading Nancy Drew has inspired my daughter to engage in many investigative adventures of her own. If Sotomayor can do it, Si Se Puede!
