Event Summary:
The United States is currently poised to lock in the productivity gains driven by new information technologies, while at the same time addressing stagnant wages and living standards of American workers. This is only possible, however, if the entire workforce is well-versed in basic IT skills that are now prerequisites for success in the 21st century economy. Moving forward, it will be increasingly difficult to find a job and climb the economic ladder without core proficiency in basic computer and communications skills.
To meet this challenge, NDN's Globalization Initiative has released a new paper by Robert J. Shapiro, entitled Tapping the Resources of America's Community Colleges: A Modest Proposal to Provide Universal Access to Computer Training. This paper proposes a simple, but effective, plan to utilize the thousands of computer labs at U.S. community colleges for continuing IT education and workforce training. On July 26th, we discussed this plan, as well as other successful examples of how to provide the workers of today and tomorrow with tools to access the global communications network and master basic computing skills. We invite you to view this important discussion about how to strengthen our workforce for the 21st century.
