Progress and Promise of the Electric Car
The Clean Energy Initiative’s panel discussion, The Promise and Progress of the Electric Car was a huge success. This panel addressed the recent emergence of the electric vehicle in today’s economy and how innovations in clean energy have opened doors for growth and opportunities of the electric car.
Barbara Tyran – Director, Washington and State Relations for Electric Power Research Institute outlined how EPRI’s research and outreach has engaged utilities, regulatory agencies, automakers to identify their roles in support of the electric car.
Genevieve Cullen – Vice President of Electric Drive Transportation Association, pointed out that US oil dependence is at the root of every major challenge for our country and the emergence of the electric car is would make a significant impact on our oil dependence. Although there are hurdles, industry and technology are on the cusp of breaking these barriers down.
Miles Keogh – Director of Grants and Research for National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) explained the need for progressive, albeit prudent, regulations to facilitate electric vehicles demand on our grid structure.
Mary Beth Stanek - Director, Federal, Environmental, and Energy Regulatory Affairs for General Motors demonstrated the key role of the automobile industry in the emergence of the EV in today’s economy.
Kyle Davis - Kyle Davis – Director, Congressional Relations for MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company – presented the hugely important role of the utility in making the grid accessible to the influx of electric cars.
Clare Giesen, Director of the Clean Energy Initiative served as the moderator. This is the fifth panel in our “Solutions Series” designed to showcase the leaders, companies, ideas and policies who are hastening our transition to a cleaner, safer and more distributed energy paradigm of the 21st Century.

It seems likely that the current capacity of the power grids supporting most U.S.cities would not be able to support large-scale adoption of electirc vehicles, say 1 EV for every 3-4 households. How is this going to be addresssed?
